Reinventing equipment rentals

United Rentals, the world’s largest construction equipment provider, asked argodesign to support the company’s digital transformation by designing and developing a vision for the company’s online ordering and rental management platform.

Leveraging data to expand value

Like many others in this industry, the firm relied primarily on retail expansion, manual processes, and outdated technology to serve the needs of its massive client base. But as customers matured, so did their expectations from providers. The ability to view real-time availability and pricing for equipment is critical to meet aggressive project timelines, and visibility into status, location, and utilization of rental items proved highly valuable to construction managers with tight budgets and profit targets.

Moving beyond equipment

Through extensive research and iterative product launches, we realized a massive growth opportunity for United Rentals to expand beyond equipment into people, material and jobsites — leveraging their growing digital platform, telematics investments, and key partnerships for more extensive project orchestration.

Decisions based on activity, not items

By creating an interface to monitor not only rentals, but all equipment across the jobsite, managers could make more informed, agile decisions to stay on track and under budget. And by giving all of that equipment a job through tasks and activities, teams could accurately forecast and better manage their work.

Transforming a legacy practice

The resulting platform produced immediate results, dramatically increasing online transactions and reducing order cancellations. But more importantly, it offered a new type of relationship between United Rentals and its customers, one based on providing data-driven insights to revolutionize the way construction managers utilize equipment, crew, and resources to enhance project delivery.
