A fresh new take on notifications

As part of their digital transformation, United Rentals — the world’s largest construction equipment rental provider, wanted to redesign their customer-facing alerts and notifications. What began as a modern usability refresh quickly evolved into an innovative new way for the company and its clients to communicate, collaborate, and automate ground operations.

Doing more with equipment data

The existing alerts platform was extremely limited, and customers longed for a more expansive solution. Beyond just reminders for upcoming and overdue rentals, equipment managers oft-requested smarter notifications to help monitor equipment location, fuel and energy levels, and utilization — key indicators construction leaders use for forecasting, and decision-making.

Tracking events across orders, equipment, and jobsites

We mapped the entire lifecycle of events for orders, equipment, and jobsites to identify pain points, opportunities, and critical communications the new system might support. More importantly, we validated these ideas and features through scenario-based storytelling resonant with major client categories and use cases.

Flexibly designed for decision-making

The designs we landed on went far beyond a simple notification system, illustrating a robust rules-based communication, collaboration, and automation platform to help construction teams monitor, share, and and make execution plans with greater confidence and agility.

A new set of tools for construction managers and their crew

We packaged the redesign vision into a series of major releases and detailed a plan for feature development across each phase. To better manage the rollout, we helped the company design and recruit important clients for a pilot rollout.
